SUMMERHILL A1 YOUTH ACADEMY OVERVIEW

The Academy course is full of fundamental life skills that are vital for success in and out of the school class room.

When push comes to shove `real life' skills often take a back seat to academics. The Academy has in its content words of wisdom for today's young adults presented at a unique location with passion and variety.

It's a sure blueprint for building your leadership skills, for knowing how to get the life you want and to motivate yourself to reach your full potential.

It's the little things that make a big difference and as the saying goes "The future belongs to those who prepare for it today".

This Academy is well worth investing time in, nine Sunday's over six months and your `Gold Card' will open up many doors for future employment and scholarships.

How to get there:
We are located 11km southwest of Tauranga, 3km climb up Reid Road off Welcome Bay Road. Membership welcomed or casual entry by donation, but please leave your dogs at home.

The subjects we cover in the thirty odd modules are very practical – a lot is common sense, wisdom and quite a few leadership skills that a future employer will value and can put into practice.

By attending the academy you’ll learn things you don’t learn at school or at home.

Your commitment is; attendance for 8 out of the 10 course days, eight hours unpaid community work and $20 entrepreneurial challenge.

The Summerhill A1 Youth Academy is a unique leadership course at a unique location that gives you a unique ‘Gold Card’ at the end that makes your CV stand out from anyone else’s.
Over the ten Sundays we cover a huge range of topics presented by various guest speakers, going through our class book and practical outdoor activities i.e. The 7 Great Habits, Moneywise, Budgeting, Bush survival, Business enterprise, Shape profiling, Life coaching, Public speaking, The six most important decisions you can make about school / parents / friends / dating and sex / addictions and self worth, careers advice and talks from guests, study opportunities we have available in the Bay, CV hints, Smart decisions, and the value of community work and helping underprivileged families overseas.
The 7 Great Habits sums it all up: Be Proactive, Begin with the end in mind, Put first things first, Think win / win, Seek first to understand then be understood, Synergize and Sharpen your saw.
The unique Gold Card is given to all graduates. It is part of their CV and gives future employers and educators an online link to the Academy and your outstanding character reference.
Motivated 15 to 20 year olds. It is most suited to school year 11, 12, 13 BUT young people who have left school and are slightly older will enjoy it as well.
Your biggest investment is time over the nine Sundays and weekend camp. The financial investment is $200 which goes to cover camp expenses. In addition it is good to budget $100 for optional extras like gliding, high ropes and options day activities.

Since 2010 we have had over 200 graduates. Many have used their Gold Card to get their holiday jobs, scholarship and a few have won awards at school using what they have achieved at the Academy as part of their CV. IT IS WELL WORTH THE EFFORT so get registered and get involved!!

Hear From Our A1 Youth Academy Graduates

    My son attended the 2016 programme at Summerhill and benefited greatly by the positive experience.

    He was reluctant to attend the course when recommended by his school but with encouragement signed up and completed the six month course. Being part of a group really helped with his confidence as his peers were inclusive and like minded individuals.

    The programme was varied and interesting and looked like much fun was being had. So thanks Summerhill for the opportunity.

    The course provided her with a huge range of exposure to different challenges including physical, team activities and community focussed fundraising. They had speakers from different sectors of the community including the Mayor, Alcohol and Drug awareness, Financial Planning and could choose a short course to train in.  

    Madison made some fantastic new friends and enjoyed the weekend camp.  The other great advantage for young people attending this course is the opportunity learn under other leaders in our community such as Garth Collings and the team of leaders.  They themselves have imparted solid wisdom and life experience for teenagers who attend this course.  We would highly recommend anyone from any walk of life attends this  Leadership course.
